We welcome your application for the position of Professor in Opera, specialising in Musical Performance.

We are looking for someone with the desire to provide teaching, conduct research and supervision. 

As a professor, you are a leader in your artistic area, the quality of activities is at the highest international level and you have a deep and broad-based knowledge of your artistic area. You are expected to engage in and lead artistic research work and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes that are part of your teaching.

Your job description includes

  • Provide teaching and supervision on all levels in Musical Performance and participate in the productions within the education.
  • Conduct and have the pianistic and pedagogical skills to provide coaching from the piano.
  • Collaborate with the teachers in Music Drama and Musical Performance and other subject areas within SKH.
  • Participate in relevant meetings within the department and pedagogical discussions.
  • Promote good relationship with the opera world and follow developments in opera art, nationally and internationally.
  • Leading and driving development within the subject field of opera at the department, developments relevant to the work at the university, and implementing relevant aspects into the teaching.
  • Actively developing SKH’s education and the artistic research, and promoting integration between these fields.
  • Leading and driving development of SKH’s courses and study programmes, drive the development within the department and working on collaborations, both internally within SKH’s and externally actors.

As a Professor you will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within SKH’s, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments or responsibility for study programmes or specialisations, board appointments. The position includes time for artistic research as agreed.

In order to be eligible for the post of professor in the artistic discipline you have to demonstrate both artistic and teaching expertise within the field of opera, specialising in musical performance.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

This requires an active artistic practice in the opera area and you should be a conductor and pianist. In addition, you have those personal abilities required to competently fulfil the appointment and to be able to represent the university in a manner beneficial to the organisation.

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria when appointing a professor shall include the degree of proficiency required to be eligible for the position. When appointing a professor, consideration shall also be taken regarding the applicant’s ability to develop, lead, and implement very high quality courses and programmes, artistic research or research, and development work.

The following criteria will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Artistic skills – excellence within your artistic field, demonstrated by active artistic practice. The quality of your activities is to be at the highest international level.
  • Teaching skills – proven teaching skills in an artistic context within or outside a university context.
  • Facilitating collaborations to the development of artistic research.
  • Administrative skills including collaboration and organizational ability.
  • Knowledge and ability to develop international collaborations and exchanges.
  • Wide experience in a variety of teaching and examination forms; the ability to develop, lead and implement education at second and third cycle level.
  • Ability to describe your teaching and your pedagogical approach.
  • Ability to interact with the surrounding society.
  • Ability to express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish and English.
  • Experience of teaching in English.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

The scope of employment is a full-time position and it is a fixed period of five years, after which the period of the employment must be renewed. However the total period of the employment may not exceed more than ten years. Employment to commence at the earliest date January 2021.
