We welcome your application for the position of Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Aural Skills

We are looking for someone with the desire to teach, conduct research, supervise at all levels within Music Theory and   

As an Assistant Professor, you must have both extensive artistic work experience as well as deep theoretical understanding of your art field. You are expected to engage in and run artistic research work and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes that are part of your teaching.

Your job description includes

  • Training students of singing in aural skills, musical form, chord theory, and piano playing with particular focus on the needs of opera singers.
  • Supervising students at second-cycle level
  • Collaborating with the faculty to plan teaching that reinforces the subject’s links to other studies.
  • Contributing to developing and clarifying the subject’s role as an element of the industrialisation process, as well as an aspect of deepened interpretation of the repertoire.
  • Planning and administration of student courses and programmes in music theory.
  • Participation in the development of existing and new courses and programmes in relation to other specialisations in the Department.
  • Working with course administration.
  • Participation in departmental development work and collaborate with both internal Uniarts organisations and external parties.
  • Actively engaging in developments in music theory and other social developments significant to work at the University.
  • Contribute to the development of SKH's education and research and promote integration between them.

You will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within Uniarts, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments such as study programme or specialisation coordinator, board appointments and be afforded the time and opportunity to pursue artistic research.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

You should have experience of teaching in music theory or aural skills.

A prerequisite for fulfilling the duties of the position is that you have an active artistic practice within opera and / or other vocal music. In addition, you have those personal abilities required to competently fulfil the appointment and to be able to represent the university in a manner beneficial to the organisation.

Assessment criteria

The following factors will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Academic/Artistic expertise; breadth and depth of knowledge in the area of artistic specialisation and a good ability to develop and implement artistic research and development activities of a high quality.
  • Teaching expertise; demonstrated pedagogical skill in artistic contexts.
  • Documented experience of teaching and supervision of music theory and/or aural skills at second-cycle level.
  • Experience of various teaching and examination forms, the ability to develop and implement high-quality teaching.
  • Knowledge and awareness of repertoires in opera and/or other vocal disciplines.
  • Documented research experience.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

You will be employed as an assistant professor of music theory and aural skills based on your background as either an academic or an artist. The scope of employment is fifty percent of a full-time position. Employment to commence by August 2020

If you are applying for the position based on your artistic background, the terms of your employment will be determined by Chapter 4, Section 10 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, i.e., the position will be limited to five years; the position can be renewed. However, the total period of employment when combined may be for a maximum of ten years.

If you are applying based on your academic background, you will be employed permanently in accordance with the Swedish Employment Protection Act following a 6 month probation period.
