The position of employment is based in the Department of Performing Arts. We provide education and conduct research within playwriting/dramaturgy for the dramatic arts, theatre directing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, make-up and wig design, set design, technical theatre and production management for the performing arts. We base our work on tried and tested knowledge in order to develop the various performing arts and attain a high level of artistic and technical skill. This requires a reflective approach that enables our students to help develop the field of performing arts following their graduation.

The Department of Performing Arts together with the Department of Acting and the Department of Film and Media are part of the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here we provide education and conduct research within film and media, acting and performing arts, and students and researchers also work together in transdisciplinary collaborations.

We are looking for someone with the desire to teach, conduct research, supervise and at all levels of Lighting Design for Performing Arts.

As an Assistant Professor, you will need have both considerable artistic practice experience and a Deep theoretical understanding of your chosen artistic discipline. You will be expected to engage in and drive artistic research and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes incorporated in your teaching.

The Lighting Design specialisation is one of nine specialisations in the performing arts programmes, which include scenography, costume design, technical coordination of production, playwriting/dramaturgy, directing, production management, sound design, and make-up and wig design. To ensure a close connection with the other artistic practices within the field of performing arts, you must have a keen interest in teaching and supervising all students at the department, both within your subject and in collective processes. You will therefore have an important function in the pedagogical work of the department’s teachers.

Your duties include:

  • Responsibility for the students’ education in Lighting Design for Performing Arts.
  • Working to develop new and existing courses and programmes in relation to other specialisations at the department.
  • Working with course administration, assisting in the departments’ development work and collaborating both internally and with external parties.
  • Actively contributing to the development of Lighting Design for Performing Arts and generally following societal developments that are relevant to the work at the university.
  • Contributing to the development of SKH’s education and research and promoting integration between these areas.

You will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within Uniarts, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments such as study programme or specialisation coordinator, board appointments and be afforded the time and opportunity to pursue artistic research.

Your duties require you to have active artistic practice in the field of Performing Arts with specialisation in Lighting Design. In addition, you should have the personal qualities necessary to fulfil your role well and to represent the university in a way which is beneficial to its activities.

You are proficient at communicating in Swedish and English, both orally and in Writing.

Assessment criteria

The following factors will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Artistic skills; broad, in-depth knowledge of the specialisation for your artistic field (Lighting Design) and a solid ability to develop and carry out artistic research and development work of a high standard.
  • Teaching expertise; demonstrated pedagogical skill in artistic contexts.
  • You are expected to be active in the area of lighting design and well-acquainted with the subject’s theoretical basis, the associated technical equipment and the craft, and to have analytical skills, experience in teaching and a keen interest in design issues, audience and society
  • Experience of working with a norm-creative perspective both in teaching and artistic practice.
  • Experience of working in a leading function in the technical organisation at a theatre and a reflective approach, preferably formulated in writing, to your own practical knowledge
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of the field of performing arts in general.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

The position is part-time (75%) and is for a set term of 5 years, after which your contract may be renewed. The total length of the employment period may not, however, exceed ten years. Employment commences in autumn 2019 or as agreed.
