Performative and Mediated Practices – general subject description

We offer artistic doctoral education in the subject Performative and Mediated Practices, in each of our research specializations - Film and Media, Choreography, Performing Arts and Opera.

Research education and employment

The doctoral candidate position involves four years of full-time study, commencing January 2021. The studies at doctoral level consist of a documented artistic research project (180 ECTS) and coursework comprised of one year of full-time study (60 ECTS).

The project’s content and focus will be managed in consultation with two supervisors. As a doctoral candidate you will be employed by one of the institutions at SKH and report to the head of the department.The education will be conducted at SKH and you are expected to be present at the workplace to the extent required by the work and the tasks included therein. In addition to individual research studies, you will be expected to participate in other university activities, and you may teach, supervise etc. within one of the departments. Eligibility

General entry requirements

To be eligible for education at doctoral level, you must fulfil one of the following three requirements;

  1. a second-cycle level degree, or
  2. completed courses corresponding to at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS must be from second-cycle level studies, or
  3. acquired (either in Sweden or abroad) professional knowledge and expertise within the arts that correspond to the above. In which case, you are required to apply for what is called an accreditation of prior learning and support your experience with relevant certificates and documents.

Specific entry requirements

To be admitted to the artistic research education Performative and Mediated Practices, the applicant must fulfil all of the following requirements:

• a first degree with at least 240 ECTS within education programmes that are relevant for performative and mediated practices as a subject area or have comparable experience of artistic work,

• show the purpose of and plan for the intended research (including financial aspects of its execution) and had this plan assessed and approved by the admissions board,

• shown continuous and ongoing artistic work as well as having performed artistic work of such an autonomous character that the applicant’s suitability for the part of the programme that consists of the research project can be assessed, 

• good oral and written English language skills.

Selection

The selection of applications chosen to proceed in the process is based on the following criteria:

  • the applicants suitability for artistic research work and potential to benefit from research education;
  • the project’s artistic quality and implementability within the given time frame (i.e. during a period corresponding to four years of full-time study);
  • the research plan’s quality with regard to the subject’s delimitation, relevance, originality, research issues, ties to and relevance to the collective area of knowledge and its method development;
  • the research project’s content in relation to an assessment of the applicant’s earlier qualifications;
  • the university’s wishes with regard to specialisation and possibilities for supervision.

The application

The application should be written in Swedish or English and be uploaded digitally. The application should consist of:

1. A project description (no more than 5 A4 pages) that contains the following: - a description of the artistic research project and its research questions, - the planned procedures and methodologies, - a discussion as to how the project relates to existing knowledge and experience within the artistic field, - your motivation for seeking a position in the research programme, and - a preliminary project budget of a maximum of 400.000 SEK. This budget sketch serves to demonstrate that production, documentation and dissemination of the project is possible within such an economical frame. The budget can be revised later. 

2. A CV containing personal details, educational programmes and degrees, positions and assignments, and artistic activities.

3. Attested copies of certificates that support the qualifications referred to in your CV, mainly from the last five years. These certificates must be in Swedish, English, Norwegian or Danish. If the documents are not written in any of these languages, you have to provide translations carried out by an authorised translator to enable us to assess the documents.

4. Optional: Any relevant documentation of your artistic work you would like to include can be uploaded or enclosed as a link, with the following specifications: Maximum five A4 pages of text and/or images, maximum three minutes of video material, in total maximum 500 mb.

2. Specify whether you meet the general entry requirements. If the answer is yes, upload a degree certificate that attests that you have the relevant degree (use PDF format if possible).

3. If you do not meet the formal criteria for the general entry requirements, you can apply for accreditation of prior learning instead. 4.Specify if you meet the specific entry requirements. If the answer is yes, upload a CV that supports this.

5.Upload your CV and attach attested copies of certificates (if you have already uploaded the documents in order to seek accreditation of prior learning, you do not need to do so again).

6. Enclose your project description.

The application process

The application process is open until 28 February 2020.

We only accept applications that have been submitted through the website’s digital application system.

There are several steps in the application process. The first selection will be made based on material submitted in the online applications. After a second selection, a number of applicants will be invited to attend interviews in Stockholm planned between 11-15 May 2020. The education is scheduled to begin in January 2021.
