We are looking for someone with the desire to lead, plan and develop the existing Master Programme in Contemporary Circus Practices and to collaborate on the development of a Master’s Programme in Directing Circus.

As well as teach, conduct research and supervise at all academic levels within expanded notion of circus practices, the person should be able to apply a critical perspective on existing norms that define the field of contemporary circus to date.

The Master Programme in Contemporary Circus Practices comprises a total of two years’ full-time, second cycle studies. The program is practice based, research preparatory (qualifying the student for third cycle studies) and leads to a Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Choreography with a Specialisation in Circus. With an emphasis on experimentation, constructive questioning and the presence of art within societal contexts, MA studies also emphasize the artist's development and articulation of an active, sustainable artistic practice.

Professors at Stockholm University of the Arts must have both artistic work experience as well as deep theoretical understanding of his/her artistic field. Professors are expected to engage in and lead artistic research work and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes of teaching.

Job description

Your work tasks also include:

• Leading, planning and developing the Master Programme in Contemporary Circus Practices.
• Participating in the development of, and then leading, a Master’s programme in directing circus.
• Teaching and supervision of PhD students as well as MA and BA students.
• Research and dissemination within your field of study.
• Engage with artistic, theoretical and educational perspectives in the international field of circus arts.
• Participating in the development of existing and new courses and programmes in the Circus Department.
• Programme administration tasks such as scheduling, quality assurance work, employing guest teachers, coordination, student contact and budget work.
• Actively contributing to the development of circus as a knowledge and research area at the University and other social development work of importance for the work at the University.
• Actively participating in departmental development work and collaborating within SKH as well as with external parties, developing SKH’s courses and artistic research, and promoting integration between these fields.

As a professor you will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration at SKH, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments or responsibility for study programs or specializations, committee and board appointments. This position includes time for artistic research.

In order to be eligible for the position of professor in the artistic discipline you have to demonstrate both artistic and teaching expertise within the field of circus and knowledge of circus with an international perspective.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

This position requires a deep understanding of and extensive experience within circus and directing. In addition, you have those personal abilities required to competently fulfil the appointment and to be able to represent the university in a manner beneficial to the organisation.

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria when appointing a professor shall include the degree of proficiency required to be eligible for the position. When appointing a professor, consideration shall also be taken regarding the applicant’s ability to develop, lead, and implement very high quality within courses and programmes, artistic research, or research and development work.

The following criteria will be assessed in this order of priority:

• Artistic expertise; excellence within the expanded notion of circus practices, demonstrated by active artistic practice, including directing. The quality of your activities is to be at the highest international level.
• Experience of developing course syllabi and leading an educational programme, administration and budget work.
• Teaching skills; proven teaching skills within the subject at hand in an artistic context within or outside a university context.
• Wide experience in a variety of teaching and examination forms within the subject at hand; the ability to develop, lead and implement education at second and third cycle level.
• Experience of supervising on third cycle level.
• Experience in initiating, developing and leading artistic research projects within the subject at hand.
• Experience of developing international collaboration and outcomes in the subject at hand.
• Knowledge and critical perspectives on existing norms that define the field of circus to date.
• International knowledge, outlook and contact network.
• Experience of management and coordination, staff, students, guests and programme related production and communication processes.
• English communication skills including teaching and writing in English.
• Experience of strategic development work in education and research.
• Good cooperation skills.
• Administrative skills.
• Practical experience of working with digital tools.

About the position

The scope of employment is 100 percent of a full-time position and it is a fixed period of 5 years, after which the period of the employment must be renewed. However, the total period of the employment may not exceed more than ten years. Employment to commence 2022-01-01, or according to agreement. 

You are employed as a Professor in Circus. The assignment of being responsible of the MA programme

is independent of the employment and can be terminated with two months' notice by both parties.
