We welcome your application for the position of Professor of Dance with the responsibility for the Master Programme New Performative Practices

We are looking for someone with the desire to lead, plan and develop the Master Programme New Performative Practices, as well as teach, conduct research and supervise at all levels within expanded notion of dance and contemporary performative practices. The person should be able to apply a critical perspective on existing norms and canons that defines the field of contemporary dance to date.

The Master Programme New Performative Practices comprises a total of two years’ full-time, second-cycle studies. The programme is practice based, research preparatory (qualifying the student for third-cycle studies) and leads to a Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Choreography with a specialisation in Performative Practices. With an emphasis on experimentation, constructive questioning and art’s presence within societal contexts, the artist's development and articulation of an active, sustainable artistic practice is the central focus of the studies.

As a professor, you must have both extensive artistic work experience as well as deep theoretical understanding of your art field. You are expected to engage in and lead artistic research work and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes that are part of your teaching.

Job description

Your work tasks also include:

  • Leading, planning and developing the Master’s Programme New Performative Practices.
  • Teaching, supervision and research.
  • Development of artistic, theoretical and educational perspectives in collaboration with the Head of Department and in dialogue with existing educational and research activities at SKH and other stakeholders, based on an integrated perspective.
  • Programme administration, with tasks such as scheduling, quality assurance work, engaging guest teachers, coordination, student contact and budget work.
  • Actively contributing to the development of dance as a knowledge and research area at the University and other social development work of importance for the work at the University.
  • Actively developing SKH’s courses and artistic research, and promoting integration between these fields.
  • Driving the departmental development work, and collaborating with both internal SKH organisations as well as with external parties.

As a professor you will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration at SKH, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments or responsibility for study programmes or specialisations, board appointments. The position includes time for artistic research as agreed.

In order to be eligible for the position of professor in the artistic discipline you have to demonstrate both artistic and teaching expertise within the field of expanded notion of dance and contemporary performative practices.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

This requires a deep understanding of and extensive experience with expanded notion of dance and contemporary performative practices. Additionally, you have those personal abilities required to competently fulfil the appointment and to be able to represent the university in a manner beneficial to the organisation.

A prerequisite for fulfilling the duties of the position is that you have an active artistic practice within the subject at hand, with clear artistic perspectives and extensive international knowledge.

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria when appointing a professor shall include the degree of proficiency required to be eligible for the position. When appointing a professor, consideration shall also be taken regarding the applicant’s ability to develop, lead, and implement very high quality within courses and programmes, artistic research, or research and development work.

The following criteria will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Artistic expertise – excellence within the expanded notion of dance and contemporary performative practices, demonstrated by active artistic practice. The quality of your activities is to be at the highest international level.
  • Experience of developing course syllabus and leading an educational program, administration and budget work.
  • Teaching skills – proven teaching skills within the subject at hand in an artistic context within or outside a university context.
  • Wide experience in a variety of teaching and examination forms within the subject at hand; the ability to develop, lead and implement education at second and third cycle level.
  • Experience of supervising on third cycle level
  • Experience in initiating, developing and leading artistic research projects within the subject at hand.
  • Experience of developing international collaboration and outcomes in the subject at hand.
  • Knowledge and critical perspectives on existing norms and canons that define the field of dance to date.
  • International knowledge, outlook and contact network.
  • Experience of management and coordination, staff, students, guests and programme related production and communication processes.
  • Good English skills. Experience of teaching in English.

About the position

This is a full-time position and it is for a fixed period of five years, after which the period of the employment must be renewed. However, the total period of the employment may not exceed more than ten years. Employment to commence at the earliest date September/October 2021.

You are employed as a Professor in Dance. The assignment of being responsible of the MA programme is independent of the employment and can be terminated with two months' notice by both parties.
