The position of employment is based in the Department of Performing Arts. We provide education and conduct research within playwriting/dramaturgy for the dramatic arts, theatre directing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, make-up and wig design, set design, technical theatre and production management for the performing arts. We base our work on tried and tested knowledge in order to develop the various performing arts and attain a high level of artistic and technical skill. This requires a reflective approach that enables our students to help develop the field of performing arts following their graduation.

The Department of Performing Arts together with the Department of Acting and the Department of Film and Media are part of the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here we provide education and conduct research within film and media, acting and performing arts, and students and researchers also work together in transdisciplinary collaborations.

We seek someone who wants to work with teaching, research and supervision across all levels in the subject of performing arts. As Assistant Professor, you must have both extensive artistic practices, as well as deep theoretical understanding of your artistic field. You will be expected to engage in and pursue artistic research work, as well as be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes that are included as part of your teaching. As Assistant Professor of Performing Arts, you will actively follow and stay abreast of developments in your own subject area, as well as the general social development that is important to work within the artistic field at the University. The duties also include working with teaching in the Department, ensuring there is a good connection with the education and research conducted at the Department and in other parts of Uniarts.

You may be given assignments of a coordination and administrative nature, such as programme or specialisation responsibility. Amongst other things, these will include course and programme planning, staffing of courses, planning and implementation of the departmental educational offering, coordination and admission to both independently taught courses and those taught within a specialisation. Development of didactic methods in the Department is also included, i.e. analysis, planning, execution and follow-up in collaboration with other departmental colleagues. In addition, you may also be given board appointments and given the time and opportunity to pursue artistic research.

You will have an important role in working towards building a common culture of openness and collaboration at Uniarts, as well as being involved in the creation of a good work environment.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

The duties require that you have an active artistic practice in the performing arts, as well as experience in planning and administration. You should also have the personal abilities that are needed to carry out the job well and be able to represent the University to its benefit.

You can communicate well both verbally and in writing in at least one Scandinavian language and English.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria will be evaluated in the following order of priority:

  • Artistic competence; broad and deep knowledge in your artistic field of specialisation, as well as a good ability to develop and implement artistic research and development work of high quality.
  • Educational competence; demonstrated educational competence in an artistic context.
  • Experience in coordinating and developing programmes and/or productions.
  • Experience in administrative work.
  • Good ability to work in teams.
  • Good abilities in the execution and implementation of development work.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

The position is full-time for a fixed period of 5 years. However, the total employment cannot exceed ten years. Start date 01/01/2020.
