The position of employment is based in the Department of Performing Arts. We provide education and conduct research within playwriting/dramaturgy for the dramatic arts, theatre directing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, make-up and wig design, set design, technical theatre and production management for the performing arts. We base our work on tried and tested knowledge in order to develop the various performing arts and attain a high level of artistic and technical skill. This requires a reflective approach that enables our students to help develop the field of performing arts following their graduation.

The Department of Performing Arts together with the Department of Acting and the Department of Film and Media are part of the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here we provide education and conduct research within film and media, acting and performing arts, and students and researchers also work together in transdisciplinary collaborations.

We are looking for someone with the desire to teach, conduct research and supervise at all levels of the performing arts. As an Assistant Professor in performing arts, you will be using your extensive knowledge in the subject to teach students in the use of tools and methods for creating forms of expression in non-traditional spaces.

You will be working with the extended area of performing arts at the department by means of e.g. site-specific community theatre, applied theatre, devised theatre and performance, as well as dance, circus, opera and music drama.

As an assistant professor, you will need to have both broad experience of artistic practice and a deep theoretical understanding of your artistic discipline. You will be expected to engage in and drive artistic research and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes involved in your teaching. You will work with a norm-critical perspective.

Your duties will also include:

  • Working with other specialisations at the department and within Uniarts to drive the development of new and existing courses.
  • Working with the teaching of students in the extended area of performing arts
  • Actively contributing to the development of your own specialised field, and generally following societal developments that are of relevance to work at the university.
  • Working with course administration, contributing to the departments’ development work, as well as collaboration both internally within Uniarts and with external partners.
  • Contributing to the development of Uniarts’ education, research and other activities.

You will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within Uniarts, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments such as study programme or specialisation coordinator, board appointments and be afforded the time and opportunity to pursue artistic research.

Your duties require you to have active artistic practice in the extended field of the performing arts. You should have experience of working with site-specific, performance, community theatre and/or applied theatre, or else you should have directed other projects based on devised theatre as a method. You will also be expected to have done artistic work in non-traditional spaces. In addition, you should have the personal qualities necessary to perform well in your role and to be able to represent the university in a way that benefits its activities.

You must be proficient at communicating in English, both orally and in writing.

Assessment criteria

The following factors will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Artistic skills: broad, in-depth knowledge of your artistic field, demonstrated by means of active artistic practice and a solid ability to develop and carry out artistic research and development work of a high standard. This means an in-depth understand of and experience in the complexity of the field of performing arts based on space, image, light, text and physical performance.
  • Teaching skills: demonstrated in an artistic context inside or outside the university. You must also be able to explain your teaching and your educational approach.
  • Broad knowledge and active artistic practice in the interdisciplinary methods of performing arts. You must also have documented experience of directing and coordinating complex processes within the performing arts.
  • Experience of working with site-specific, performance, community theatre and/or applied theatre, or of having directed other projects based on devised theatre as a method. In addition, you must also have done artistic work in non-traditional spaces. You are also motivated by a societal perspective in the issues you have addressed in relation to a public.
  • Evidence of an ability to work with others, sensitivity and flexibility, and being accustomed to working both independently and as part of a team.

If you are unable to teach in Swedish/Norwegian/Danish, you will be expected to be able to do so within two years of taking up the position

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

The appointment is on a full-time basis and is for a set term of 2 years, after which it may be renewed. However, the total length of the employment may not exceed ten years.

Employment commences in autumn 2019 or as agreed.
