The position of employment is based in the Department of Performing Arts. We provide education and conduct research within playwriting/dramaturgy for the dramatic arts, theatre directing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, make-up and wig design, set design, technical theatre and production management for the performing arts. We base our work on tried and tested knowledge in order to develop the various performing arts and attain a high level of artistic and technical skill. This requires a reflective approach that enables our students to help develop the field of performing arts following their graduation.

The Department of Performing Arts together with the Department of Acting and the Department of Film and Media are part of the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here we provide education and conduct research within film and media, acting and performing arts, and students and researchers also work together in transdisciplinary collaborations.

We are looking for someone with the desire to teach, conduct research and supervise at all levels of performing arts production

Performing arts management is one of nine programmes in performing arts. The others are Set Design, Costume Design, Technical management, Playwriting/Dramaturgy, Theatre Directing, Lighting Design, Sound Design, and Make-up and Wig Design. Students on the performing arts management programme will acquire the ability to develop, lead, coordinate and drive productions and projects in relation to artistic and financial frameworks. To ensure close links to the other artistic practices of performing arts, you must have a genuine interest in teaching and supervising all students at the department, both in your own subject and in collective processes. You will therefore play an important role in the development of the department’s pedagogical work, together with the teaching staff.

As an Assistant Professor, you will need have both considerable artistic practice experience and a Deep theoretical understanding of your chosen artistic discipline. You will be expected to engage in and drive artistic research and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes incorporated in your teaching.

Your work tasks will include:

  • The development of student education in performing arts production.
  • The development of existing and new courses and study programmes in relation to other specialisations at the department.
  • Course administration, participation in departmental developmental processes, and in-house collaboration within SKH and with external parties.
  • Active participation in the development of the performing arts management and in societal developments that are of significance for the university’s activities.
  • Contributing to the development and integration of education and research at SKH.

You will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within Uniarts, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments such as study programme or specialisation coordinator, board appointments and be afforded the time and opportunity to pursue artistic research.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

The work tasks require you to have had experience of practical artistic work within performing arts production. In addition, you must have the personal traits needed to perform the tasks of this appointment satisfactorily and to represent the university in a manner that is beneficial for its activities.

You are proficient at communicating in Swedish and English, both orally and in Writing.

 

Assessment criteria

The following factors will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Artistic expertise: broad and in-depth knowledge within the specialisation of your artistic field, and a well-developed ability to manage and conduct artistic research and development work of high quality.
  • Teaching expertise: demonstrated pedagogical skill in artistic contexts.
  • Recent experience of working as a producer in both the free and institutional fields of performing arts, and experience of producing different forms of performing arts.
  • Experience of both national and international performing arts production
  • Active practice within the performing arts production and a solid knowledge of the theoretical grounds of the subject, its technical equipment and crafts. You have analytical skills, teaching experience and a keen interest in interpretation and expression, the audience, and the world around.
  • Experience of working with a norm-critical perspective, both in teaching and in artistic practices.
  • Documented experience of collaboration and interaction with the world around.
  • Having a reflective approach towards your own practical skills, preferably provided in writing, will be regarded as an additional qualification.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

This appointment is 50 percent of full-time and is limited in time to 5 years. The appointment can be extended but the total period of employment can be maximum ten years. The appointment will commence in August 2019.
