The position of employment is based in the Department of Performing Arts. We provide education and conduct research within playwriting/dramaturgy for the dramatic arts, theatre directing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, make-up and wig design, set design, technical theatre and production management for the performing arts. We base our work on tried and tested knowledge in order to develop the various performing arts and attain a high level of artistic and technical skill. This requires a reflective approach that enables our students to help develop the field of performing arts following their graduation.

The Department of Performing Arts together with the Department of Acting and the Department of Film and Media are part of the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here we provide education and conduct research within film and media, acting and performing arts, and students and researchers also work together in transdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

We are looking for somebody who wants to combine teaching and supervision duties at first, second and third-cycle levels with artistic research.

The position primarily involves:

  • Teaching covering the expansive scope of theatre directing, from the classic institutional theatre to public spaces as a stage.
  • Developing an expanding concept of directorship throughout the performing arts.
  • Running the development of the subject of theatre direction in addition to new courses and programmes at the department.
  • Working with course administration and developing collaborations both within Uniarts and with external national and international figures.
  • Running the development of research at the department, and contributing to the development of activities as a whole. As a professor, you have an important role in the work to create a mutual culture of openness and collaboration at Uniarts, as well as participating in creating a good work environment.
  • Following the development within the subject of theatre direction and the social development significant to work at the university.

As a professor, you may become responsible for programmes or specialisations and allocated assignments. There will also be the possibility to prepare for artistic research as part of your position.

Eligibility

We are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated both artistic and teaching skills.

Artistic skills at Professor level mean being a leader in your artistic field Theatre Directing, maintaining the quality of your activity at the highest international level and having deep and broad knowledge of your artistic field.

Teaching skill at Professor level means that you have demonstrated teaching skill in artistic contexts within or outside the university. The ability to develop, lead and conduct high-quality teaching at various levels.

The tasks expect you to have active artistic experience within theatre direction in all areas of the performing arts. This requires deep understanding and experience of the complexity of the performing arts based on space, image, lighting, text and the physical gestalt. You are to have extensive and qualified leadership experience within theatre direction, and be able to express yourself well in both written and spoken Swedish and English. Additionally, you will also need the personal characteristics required to successfully fulfil the position, and to be able to represent the university in a way that benefits the organisation.

Assessment criteria

The following assessment criteria will be used when ranking the applications:

  • Artistic proficiency; leadership throughout theatre direction – from the classic institutional stage to public spaces as an arena – shown by active artistic experience. This requires deep understanding and experience of the complexity of the performing arts based on space, image, lighting, text and the physical gestalt.
  • Expansive, detailed knowledge and active artistic experience within the field of direction and the performing arts.
  • Documented experience of leadership and coordination of complex areas of theatre direction.
  • Didactic skills: display pedagogical ability in an artistic context either within or beyond the university world, and be accustomed to teaching students at different levels from different artistic disciplines. You must also have the ability to describe your teaching and your didactic approach.
  • Experience of working with norm-critical perspectives, both in teaching and artistic practice.
  • Experience of community theatre, applied theatre, or running other projects based on the devised theatre method. Additionally, your questioning in relation to an audience is driven by a social perspective.
  • Documented successful ability to collaborate, awareness and flexibility and be accustomed to working independently and in a team.

You must have completed training in teaching at university level or are expected to complete such a course within the next three years. Alternatively, you must have documented equivalent knowledge.

About the position of employment

This is a full-time position and is limited to five years; the position can be renewed. However, the combined period of employment may not exceed ten years. Commencing 7 May 2019.
